The arena sits in the Johanneshov district, but its real feature is the roof . In 1955 it opened as Johanneshovs Isstadion, an outdoor stadium with standing terraces and a capacity that sat between 15,000 and 17,000. The crowd for the boxing match in 1957 swallowed the place whole, though the exact number is not definitively recorded.

The roof arrived in 1962. A renovation in 2002 finished the job, replacing every chair and adding restaurant areas. The current capacity for ice hockey is 8,094 spectators, all seated.

The name Hovet stuck in 1989, though locals had used it as a nickname for decades. The club AIK IF plays there, and Djurgårdens IF does too. For a long time Hammarby IF also called it home. The highest attendance for a hockey match was 17,098, a derby between AIK and Djurgårdens IF during the 1962/63 season.

It hosted Bruce Springsteen in 2005 and Foo Fighters in 2002. In May 2016 the ice was covered and the arena became the press centre for the Eurovision Song Contest.

The surface is natural ice, artificially frozen.
