Sporthalle Charlottenburg: Stadium in Berlin

The hall is defined by its roof. A reinforced concrete barrel vault stretches across the site, supported by steel piles driven into the ground to reach the water table below.

Built for West Berlin after the war, it stands as a cultural monument today. The architects chose this shape not for style, but for the difficult soil near the Spree river. Football fans might expect a pitch cut with grass, but here the game is played on wood.

Alba Berlin (Frauen) and Füchse Berlin (Frauen) play there now. They share the space with boxing matches and karate tournaments. In the nineteen-nineties, the venue hosted the Basketball Supercup for national teams five times. It also saw the inauguration of a boxing tournament in 1964, shortly after it opened.

Most days it is quiet. It was larger than any other post-war gymnasium in the city when it was finished. Now it is one of many, but the vault remains intact.
