Thomas Domenig Stadion

Thomas Domenig Stadion sits in the Obere Au district of Chur. What sets it apart is its life as a multi-purpose hall. The concrete floor, laid down for the summer, waits out the months until the refrigerated ice arrives. For half the year it is an arena; for the other, a hall. The city took ownership in 2017, but the structure itself has always belonged to Thomas Domenig, the local architect who built it.

There is a limit to how many people the building will hold. The official capacity hovers around 6,500, but the fire safety regulations are strict. The number was cut to 2,800, then lifted to 3,500 after some work. It is not yet clear how much more money is needed to restore the full capacity. The ice is artificial, brought in every September and taken out by March. When the ice is gone, the floor belongs to handball and floorball. The record attendance for a floorball match was 2,800, a quarter-final between EHC Chur and Alligator Malans. For ice hockey, the highest crowd was 3,000 at the league final. The venue is managed by Sport- und Eventanlagen Chur.

Concerts have also worked here. Die Toten Hosen played in 2005, and Gotthard followed shortly after. The schedule lists Burna Boy for 2026 and Mumford & Sons for 2025. EHC Chur plays their home games here, competing in the Swiss League. The Eisclub Chur uses the same space for figure skating.
