TUT Stadium

TUT Stadium is located on the campus of the Tshwane University of Technology. The stands are low, the crowd is small, and the game is played in the shadow of a university that has little interest in grandeur. The surface is natural grass, worn in the middle where the midfield battle is fought, and the air carries the smell of cut turf and damp earth after rain.

Women’s football has found a home here. The Tshwane University of Technology Women’s F.C. use the ground as their base in the SAFA Women’s League, and on match days the pitch fills with their movement before the stands wake up. Men’s teams in the Motsepe Foundation Championship have also used the space, including Pretoria Callies and Gomora United, though the fixtures arrive and leave without ceremony. Varsity matches between TUT, the University of Johannesburg and the University of Pretoria once filled the space with students, but those days feel distant now.

There is no attendance record worth noting. The capacity is often given as 2,500, though some sources suggest 3,000, and the truth is that the number changes depending on who you ask and what day you stand there. The stadium opened in a year no one can agree on, and the builder’s name has vanished from the records. The address is Staatsartillerie Road, a street that does not announce itself to visitors.

It is a ground that holds its own shape. The concrete steps are worn smooth in places, the grass is kept short and even, and the goalposts stand where they have always stood. It does not need to be anything more than a place where a team can play.
