About

The 1. Liga Women serves as the premier tier of women's football within the Czech Republic. Established in 1993 by the Football Association of the Czech Republic, the competition began as a distinct entity following the dissolution of the Czechoslovak championship. It occupies the highest position in the national pyramid, sitting directly above the second division.

The structure involves eight participating clubs navigating a split-season format. Teams exchange fixtures twice during the preliminary phase, accumulating fourteen matches before the field divides. The top four sides enter a Championship Group, while the remaining squads compete in a Relegation Group, carrying their accumulated points forward. Each group plays six additional encounters to determine final placements. This configuration ensures that the bottom team faces immediate exit to the second tier, while the division winner secures promotion.

Success in the league grants access to European stages. The champion and runner-up earn spots in the UEFA Women's Champions League, while the third-place finisher qualifies for continental play, potentially through the UEFA Women's Conference League pathway. AC Sparta Prague holds the record for dominance, claiming twenty-one titles, including a streak of nine consecutive championships between 2000 and 2009. SK Slavia Prague ranks second with eleven victories and currently defends the title after winning the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns.

Commercial stability arrived recently when Fortuna became the inaugural general partner in August 2024, leading to the rebranding as Fortuna=Liga žen. This sponsorship marks a shift from a history of limited commercial backing. Structural evolution has seen the league adjust team numbers from twelve down to eight over recent years, settling on the current split model introduced in the 2011/12 season.
