About

CONMEBOL Recopa Sudamericana is a continental super cup competition organized by CONMEBOL. It was founded in 1989, with the first edition played in that year, though organized starting in 1988. The competition sits at the top level of South American club football hierarchy as a 'Super Cup', distinct from the Copa Libertadores (premier tournament) and Copa Sudamericana (secondary tournament).

It is contested annually between the winners of the previous year's Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. If a single team wins both tournaments, the runner-up of the Copa Sudamericana qualifies for the Recopa. The final is played over two legs (home and away). Unlike most other competitions, the Recopa does not use the away goals rule or extra time; if the aggregate score is tied after two legs, the winner is decided by penalty kicks.

There is no promotion or relegation system. The competition went on hiatus from 1999 to 2002 due to the discontinuation of the Supercopa Sudamericana, which was the original secondary tournament. It resumed in 2003 with the Copa Sudamericana. Notable sponsors include Fox Sports (2005), Visa (2006–2008), and Banco Santander (2012–present).

Boca Juniors is the most successful club with 4 titles. The current holder is Lanús, who won the 2026 edition by defeating Flamengo 4–2 on aggregate. The competition is distinct from the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana in that it involves only two teams and serves as a championship match between the reigning champions of the other two major CONMEBOL tournaments.
