The **Federation Cup** stands as the premier domestic knockout football competition in Bangladesh, organized by the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF). Established in 1980, it ranks as the second-oldest major domestic cup in the nation, trailing only the Independence Cup. Unlike the top-tier league, which operates on a points system, this tournament determines its champion through a high-stakes knockout format.
The competition structure divides participating clubs into two groups of five. The top two teams from each group progress to the knockout stage, comprising quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final. These decisive matches are played as single legs at neutral venues. If a contest ends in a draw after 90 minutes, the outcome is settled via extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out. While qualification is primarily reserved for clubs from the Bangladesh Football League, occasional slots are available for teams from lower divisions or invited participants.
Success in the Federation Cup carries significant regional weight. The winner qualifies for the AFC Challenge League preliminary stage and the Bangladesh Challenge Cup. Historical dominance has shifted over the decades, with Abahani Limited Dhaka holding the record for the most titles. In recent years, Bashundhara Kings have emerged as a formidable force, securing multiple consecutive victories. The tournament has experienced periods of suspension and interruptions, including a final abandoned due to riots in 1984, yet it remains a consistent fixture in the Bangladeshi sporting calendar.
