About

The HNL, currently branded as SuperSport HNL, stands as the top tier of the Croatian football pyramid. Following Croatia’s independence, the league replaced the Yugoslav First League for domestic clubs. Its format diverges from standard patterns: a quadruple round-robin system sees each of the ten teams play every opponent four times. This structure results in 36 matchdays per team, with the final table determined by cumulative results rather than mid-season splits.

Relegation rules effective from the 2024/25 season dictate that the bottom-placed team drops directly to the second tier. The ninth-placed side enters a double-leg playoff against the runner-up of that lower division. The champion of the second tier gains automatic promotion to the top flight. This system ensures a clear pathway for clubs seeking advancement within the national hierarchy.

Dinamo Zagreb remains the most successful entity in the league’s history, securing 26 titles since its inception. The rivalry between Dinamo and Hajduk Split, termed the Eternal Derby, has seen these two clubs dominate the trophy count, winning all but two championships since independence. The 1992 season holds particular historical significance, played within a single calendar year due to the ongoing conflict and lack of UEFA recognition for the national federation at the time.

The competition distinguishes itself from the Croatian Cup through European qualification routes. The league winner advances to the UEFA Champions League, while the Cup victor moves to the UEFA Europa League. Should the Cup winner qualify for Europe via the league standings, the Europa League spot transfers to the next highest-placed league team. This separation of European pathways defines the primary objective for clubs competing in the top flight.
