Premier League (Malta) 2026/27

The Premier League stands as the highest level of professional football in Malta, governed by the Malta Football Association. Established in 1909, originally under the name First Division, it has evolved into the country’s premier domestic tournament. The competition occupies the top tier of the Maltese football structure, sitting above the second-tier Challenge League and the FA Trophy knockout cup. It differs significantly from its neighbours in format and purpose, offering a distinct pathway for European qualification and domestic survival.

Unlike the standard double round-robin format used in the Challenge League, the Premier League employs a unique split system. The season begins with an Opening Round, after which the participating clubs divide into two separate groups: a Championship Group comprising the top six sides and a Relegation Group containing the bottom six. Teams contest matches only within their respective groups during the second phase. Crucially, points are reset to zero for this stage, ensuring that every game in the latter half of the season directly impacts the final outcome. This structure creates a high-stakes environment where positioning early on determines the nature of the subsequent campaign.

The league operates with promotion and relegation links to the lower divisions. The top two teams from the Challenge League secure promotion to the Premier League, while the four lowest-placed clubs in the top flight face descent. European access is strictly tied to final league positions. The champion secures a place in the UEFA Champions League, while the second and third-placed teams advance to the UEFA Europa Conference League. This contrasts with the FA Trophy, which provides an alternative, secondary route to European competition through knockout stages. The competition currently hosts twelve clubs, a reduction from fourteen in the previous season, aiming to streamline the schedule and maintain competitive balance within the Maltese football pyramid.
