Ferdinand von Hompesch, the Grand Master who raised Żabbar out of the village of Żejtun and gave it a city's name in the eighteenth century, left the place with a title it still carries — Città Hompesch. The football club that took the town's name arrived on 30 November 1912.
The Third Division title in 1980–81 was followed by the Second the season after, and by 1982–83 the club had taken the First Division as well. They won the First Division twice more, in 1994–95 and 2003–04.
Żabbar took the National Amateur Cup in 2021–22, went up through the amateur league play-offs the following season, and then finished second in the Challenge League in 2023–24. That runners-up place carried them into the Premier League for 2024–25 — the first season of top-division football in the club's history.
Home is Il-Foss Ground, where the club plays in the yellow that gave it its name.
