The Sultan Qaboos Cup stands as the premier national knockout football competition in Oman. Organized by the Oman Football Association (OFA), it holds the distinction of being the oldest major domestic trophy in Omani football, having been established in 1972. This predates the top-flight league, which began in 1976. The tournament is named in honour of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, who personally presented the trophy to winners from its inception. It serves as the primary route to the Oman Super Cup, where the winner faces the Oman Professional League champion. If a club achieves the domestic double, the Super Cup spot is typically awarded to the League runner-up.
The format is a single-elimination knockout tournament. Participation has varied over the years, with recent editions featuring 22 clubs, while historically it has included up to 32 teams. The early rounds are typically played as single-leg ties. The Quarter-finals and Semi-finals are often contested over two legs, while the Final is a single match held at a neutral venue. There is no promotion or relegation associated with the cup, as it is open to clubs from the Oman Professional League and lower divisions.
Dhofar SC is the most successful club in the competition's history, having won the title 11 times. Victories include 1977, 1980, 1981, 1990, 1999, 2004, 2006, 2011, 2019–20, 2020–21, and 2023–24. They are followed by Fanja SC with 9 titles and Al-Ahli SC with 5. The most recent champion is Al-Shabab SC, who won their first-ever Sultan Cup title in the 2024–25 season by defeating Al-Seeb 1–0 in the final. The competition has retained its official name throughout its history, though it was briefly known as the Oman Cup in its early years.
