The Franz Beckenbauer Supercup stands as the opening fixture for German football, a single-match contest that defines the season before the league begins. Previously known as the DFL-Supercup and DFB-Supercup, the competition sits at the apex of the national pyramid, distinct from the multi-round DFB-Pokal. It is organized by the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) and typically takes place in August.
The format is straightforward: a ninety-minute match between the previous season's Bundesliga champion and the DFB-Pokal winner. Should one side claim both honours, they face the league runner-up instead. There is no extra time; a draw leads directly to a penalty shootout. This structure ensures a decisive outcome without extending the game into additional periods.
Historical context shapes the event's identity. First held in 1987 under the DFB, the tournament ran annually until 1996 before a hiatus. It was replaced by the DFL-Ligapokal until 2007, with unofficial matches occurring in 2008 and 2009. The DFL revived the official competition in 2010. Since 2025, the trophy has borne the name of the legendary player Franz Beckenbauer.
Bayern Munich leads the record with twelve titles, including victories in 1987, 1990, and recent years such as 2020, 2021, 2022, 2025, and 2026. Borussia Dortmund follows with six wins, while Werder Bremen has secured three. Other past victors include 1. FC Kaiserslautern, VfB Stuttgart, Schalke 04, VfL Wolfsburg, RB Leipzig, and Bayer Leverkusen. The current holder is Bayern Munich, who beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the 2026 final.
