The Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira serves as the traditional season opener for Portuguese football, typically held in late July or August. It is an annual match organized by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The fixture pits the winners of the Primeira League against the victors of the Taça de Portugal. Should a club secure the double, the runner-up of the cup competition steps in to contest the title.
Historically contested over two legs, the format shifted to a single match at a neutral venue during the 2000–01 season to reduce fixture congestion. If the game ends in a draw, it is decided by extra time and penalties. The competition traces its origins to 1979, when Boavista defeated FC Porto 2–1 in the inaugural edition. Although played in 1979 and 1980, the FPF did not officially recognize the tournament until 1981; those earlier editions are retrospectively counted.
FC Porto holds the record for success with 25 titles. Benfica follows with 10 victories, while Sporting CP has claimed 9. The current holder is FC Porto, who secured the 2026 edition by defeating SC União Torreense 1–0. In the previous year, Benfica beat Sporting CP 1–0 to take the crown. The tournament has featured title sponsors, including Vodafone from 2015 to 2024 and Betano since 2025.
The winner earns no automatic qualification for the UEFA Super Cup, which is reserved for the Champions League and Europa League winners. However, the victor may still qualify for European competition based on their domestic standing. Notable historical anomalies include predecessor competitions such as the Taça Império and Taça de Ouro da Imprensa.
