About

The Russian Super Cup is a one-match football fixture arranged by the Russian Football Union. It acts as the curtain-raiser for the domestic season, normally taking place in July. The contest pits the winner of the previous season’s Russian Premier League against the winner of the Russian Cup. A unique rule applies if one club secures both titles, known as the double; in that scenario, the league runner-up steps in to face the cup champion instead. The match is a single encounter with no return leg. Historically, drawn games after ninety minutes went to extra time before penalties, but regulations changed in 2024. Now, a stalemate after the full time leads directly to a penalty shootout.

Zenit Saint Petersburg holds the record for success, claiming ten titles by the end of the 2026 season. CSKA Moscow follows with eight victories. Lokomotiv Moscow has won three times, while Rubin Kazan and Spartak Moscow each have two and one triumphs respectively. The 2026 edition saw Zenit defeat Spartak Moscow to retain the trophy. Recent finals have featured high-scoring affairs, including Zenit’s 4-2 victory over Krasnodar in 2024 and CSKA’s narrow 1-0 win against the same opponents the following year.

Unlike the Russian Cup, which is a multi-stage tournament open to teams from various levels including amateurs, the Super Cup is strictly an elite event. It does not involve promotion or relegation, nor does it offer qualification for European competitions. Those spots are determined solely by league standing or Cup performance. The tournament carries the branding of its current sponsor, OLIMPBET, making it the OLIMPBET Russian Supercup. While it is often viewed as a minor trophy compared to the league title or the main knockout cup, it remains the traditional opening match for the Russian Football Union’s calendar.
