About

The Youth Football League is the principal development competition for reserve and academy sides in Russian football. Established in 2008, it replaced the Tournament of Reserve Teams to create a more professional pathway for emerging players. The structure serves as the final stage before senior professional football, bridging the gap between junior academies and the Russian Premier League.

Administrative oversight shifted to the Youth Football League in 2022, a subsidiary of the Russian Football Union. Since the 2025 season, the competition operates with two distinct divisions. Division A includes the youth teams of top-tier clubs alongside elite academies, while Division B features regional and lower-division sides. Internal promotion and relegation links these tiers, ensuring competitive balance within the league itself.

Participants are generally under 21 years old, although age limits have varied historically. The regular season follows a double round-robin format, with home and away fixtures determining the standings. Unlike traditional senior leagues, there is no promotion to the first division; instead, success here marks players for senior squads. The most decorated clubs in the modern era include CSKA Moscow, Dynamo Moscow, and Spartak Moscow, each holding four titles. Zenit Saint Petersburg also secured two championships, including the most recent 2024/25 edition.

Academies outside the top tier, such as Chertanovo, Almaz Antey, and Akademiya Konoplev, compete alongside club reserves. This arrangement provides a vital platform for non-premier league talent. The competition remains distinct from the Youth Football League founded in 2019, which focuses on younger age groups. The official digital presence is maintained at yflrussia.ru.
