The Maltese Super Cup is an annual football fixture in Malta organised by the Malta Football Association (MFA). It is a single-match contest between the winners of the previous season’s Maltese Premier League and the holders of the Maltese FA Trophy. If the league champion completes the double, the runners-up enter instead. The match usually takes place in mid-December as a curtain-raiser for the new campaign. Historically, the final has been played as one game, with extra time and penalty shootouts available to resolve draws. Most finals have occurred at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali, although the 2022 edition was hosted at the Gozo Stadium. Valletta FC holds the record with 13 titles, while Birkirkara FC and Ħamrun Spartans have each claimed seven. The reigning champions are Hibernians FC, who secured their fifth crown in the 2025 final against Ħamrun Spartans. The competition was officially established in 1985, following earlier informal events in the mid-twentieth century. It has faced interruptions, notably missing editions in 2020 and 2021. Past versions carried sponsorship names including the BOV Super Cup and the Rothmans Super Cup. The Super Cup is distinct from the Maltese FA Trophy, which allows participation from all senior clubs across the Maltese and Gozitan systems. European qualification spots are determined exclusively by league standing and FA Trophy results, not by Super Cup performance.
