The Supercopa de Costa Rica is a single-match fixture that opens the football season in Costa Rica. Organised by the Unión de Clubes de Fútbol de la Primera División (UNAFUT), it brings together the winners of the two annual league tournaments: the Apertura and the Clausura. The event typically takes place in July, serving as the curtain-raiser for the new campaign. The competition has undergone several transformations since its inception. It was first held in 1976 as the Copa Campeón de Campeones under the Costa Rican Football Federation (FEDEFUTBOL). After a long hiatus between 2013 and 2019, UNAFUT permanently reinstated the tournament in 2020. A key regulation governs the participation criteria: if one club wins both league titles, achieving a "double," the Supercopa is not held for that season. This rule was explicitly applied in 2025, meaning no match was played despite the league winners being determined. Club Sport Herediano stands out as the most successful entity in the modern era of the competition. They secured the title in 2020, 2022, 2024, and 2026. In the 2026 edition, Herediano defeated LD Alajuelense 1-0 to claim the trophy. Deportivo Saprissa and LD Alajuelense have also been frequent winners throughout the competition's history. Past editions between 2020 and 2022 were officially sponsored by Liga Promerica, under the name Supercopa Liga Promerica. The tournament is distinct from the domestic cup, which involves lower-division teams. There is no promotion or relegation associated with the Supercopa. The official website for the competition and the league remains unafut.com. While the competition was initially organized by FEDEFUTBOL, UNAFUT currently manages the event, ensuring it remains a high-profile opening fixture for Costa Rican football.
