The Superliga operates as the highest tier of men's football in Kosovo. Organized by the Football Federation of Kosovo, it sits at Level 1 of the national pyramid, directly above the Kosovo First League. The competition traces its institutional origins to 1945 as the Kosovo Province League within the Yugoslav system. Following the dissolution of Yugoslavia, an unrecognized parallel competition emerged in 1991. A unified national championship was re-established in 1999 under the Superliga name.
The current structure features 10 clubs playing a continuous round-robin format. Each team contests 36 matches against opponents. The season concludes with direct promotion and relegation without playoff phases. The bottom two teams drop to the First League, while the top two from that division rise.
FC Prishtina holds the record for the most titles in the post-1999 era with eight wins. Including pre-1999 championships, this total rises to eleven. FC Drita holds the current title after winning consecutive seasons. KF Ballkani previously secured three consecutive championships.
The league maintains a distinct identity compared to the Serbian SuperLiga due to its political history and international status. Kosovo clubs faced exclusion from European competitions until UEFA admission in 2016. This change ended a period of isolation for domestic teams. Structural differences persist regarding northern clubs; Serbian-majority teams in northern Kosovo compete under the FFK rather than the Serbian federation. Serbia does not recognize the FFK or the league as a national top division, viewing it as a regional entity. The competition is characterized by its small scale relative to other European leagues. Recent European participation includes Ballkani reaching a group stage and Drita achieving a first Champions League victory for a Kosovar club.
