UEFA Super Cup contest stands apart from domestic leagues as a continental super cup. It pits the winners of the UEFA Champions League against the victors of the UEFA Europa League. The fixture serves as the curtain-raiser to the European club season, played as a single leg at a neutral venue.
The tournament originated in 1971 following a proposal by Anton Witkamp. The inaugural official edition took place in 1973 between Ajax and AC Milan. Throughout its history, the format has evolved; it was contested over two legs until 1997. A significant rule change in 2023 removed extra time, meaning tied matches after 90 minutes go straight to a penalty shoot-out. The event was renamed from 'European Super Cup' to 'UEFA Super Cup' in 1995.
Real Madrid holds the record for most titles with six victories. This achievement places them ahead of AC Milan and Barcelona, who have each won the competition five times. The current holder, as of 2025, is Paris Saint-Germain. They secured their trophy by defeating Tottenham Hotspur on penalties following a 2-2 draw.
The competition sits outside the domestic pyramid structure. While domestic leagues feed into European tiers, this match brings together the champions of the two primary continental club competitions. The original trophy is retained by UEFA. Winners receive a replica, unless they win five times or three in a row, though the latter rule was abolished in 2008. The 2026 edition will feature clubs such as Real Madrid and Atalanta among the participants.
