The WK League operates as the premier division for women's football in South Korea. It functions as a standalone semi-professional entity, distinct from the fully professional men's K League pyramid. The competition is governed jointly by the Korea Women's Football Federation and the Korea Football Association rather than the Korea Professional Football League.
The season runs from March to September, with each of the eight participating clubs playing 28 matches. Teams face every opponent four times in a home-and-away format. Because it is the only women's league in the country, there is no promotion or relegation system in place.
Playoff qualification follows a specific structure. The top three teams progress to the postseason. The second and third-placed sides compete in a single-legged playoff match. The winner of that fixture then advances to a two-legged championship final against the team that finished first.
Incheon Hyundai Steel Red Angels holds the record for success, winning eleven consecutive titles between 2013 and 2023. Hwacheon KSPO claimed their first title in 2025 after defeating Seoul City WFC on aggregate.
The league serves as the domestic qualifier for the AFC Women's Champions League. Its financial scale remains lower than the men's equivalent, reflecting its semi-professional status. The competition was established in 2009 after a pilot exhibition league in 2008.
