About
The FIFA U-20 World Cup is the premier global championship for men’s national teams with players under the age of 20. Organised by FIFA, the tournament operates outside any single national pyramid structure, bringing together the best young talent from every continent. Originally launched as the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1977, it adopted its current name in 2005. The event sits distinct from the U-17 World Cup and the Olympic Football Tournament, serving as the definitive stage for this specific age bracket and a vital scouting ground for elite clubs worldwide. The final tournament features 24 teams, expanded from 16 in 1997. These sides are divided into six groups of four for a round-robin group stage. The top two teams from each group, alongside the four best third-placed teams, progress to a knockout phase that includes the Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and the Final. Qualification for the main event is secured through continental youth championships, including the AFC U-20 Asian Cup, CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, CONCACAF U-20 Championship, CONMEBOL Sub-20, OFC U-19 Championship, and UEFA European Under-19 Championship. Argentina holds the record for most titles with six victories, while Brazil has won five. Morocco entered the list of champions in 2025, defeating Argentina 2–0 in the final to claim their first title. The competition has a long history of producing future stars, with notable players such as Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, and Erling Haaland launching their careers on this stage. Individual records include Javier Saviola’s 11 goals in 2001 and the largest final margin of four goals, achieved twice previously. The tournament is governed by a strict age limit, with no promotion or relegation within its own structure, ensuring a pure contest of youth skill at the highest level.
