4 De Mayo edge past Fulgencio Egrós in Copa Paraguay
4 De Mayo and Fulgencio Egrós met in the Round of 32 of the Copa Paraguay on 11 August, and the hosts held on for a 3-2 win. Two goals in the first half put them ahead, and a second-half flurry from the visitors was not enough to turn things around. By then the match had already decided its contour.
A. Gaona opened the scoring in the 27th minute, and J. Vargas doubled the lead just before the break with a goal at 45+1. And here's the thing — the visitors came out of the interval and immediately found their footing. J. Maidana pulled one back in the 49th minute, and F. A. Antunez Centurion levelled a minute later.
To be fair, the momentum swung, but 4 De Mayo held their shape. L. Paez restored the lead in the 81st minute, and that was enough to carry them through. The visitors pressed on, but the tie was already slipping away.
Statistics tell part of the story. The hosts had 40 per cent possession and ten shots on target, while Fulgencio Egrós held 60 per cent and managed four shots on target. Both sides registered six shots off target, and corners were even at three each. Many shots with one goal means chances went begging, and the visitors paid for a sloppy opening.
The result keeps 4 De Mayo alive in the competition, while Fulgencio Egrós are running out of games. There is not much to read into the recent form of the visitors — a mix of defeats and a solitary win — but tonight the difference was in those few moments that mattered.
