Beitar Jerusalem claimed a 2-1 victory over Austria Vienna in extra time at the Generali Arena on Wednesday evening. The result sent the Israeli side through to the next round of the UEFA Conference League third qualifying round. The hosts had taken the lead just moments after the visitors went ahead twice.
Omer Atzili opened the scoring in the 32nd minute before Johnbosco Samuel Kalu doubled the advantage at the 56th minute. Austria Vienna responded quickly with Kelvin Owusu Boateng pulling one back in the 58th minute. By then the momentum had shifted and the visitors looked comfortable.
Austria Vienna made three changes at the 59th minute in a bid to get back into the game. Matteo Schablas saw yellow for a foul in the 70th minute as the hosts pushed forward. Boateng was substituted in the 72nd minute, perhaps to freshen up the attack.
The match dragged into extra time with both sides trading bookings. Tomer Yosefi received a yellow in the 99th minute while Lee Tae-seok was cautioned at 111 minutes. Beitar brought on Omer Atzili for another player at the 106th minute, and the visitors held on grimly to secure the win.
Beitar Jerusalem dominated possession with 66 per cent compared to their opponents' 34 per cent. The visitors registered nine shots on target to four and created four big chances against two. Austria Vienna's expected goals figure of 1.38 underlined how they made do with fewer opportunities.
The victory means Beitar Jerusalem extend their unbeaten run to eight across all competitions. Austria Vienna's recent form took another blow after losing 2-1 to LASK Linz earlier in the week. The Israeli side now advance knowing they have the away goal advantage if applicable.
