Match report
Espanyol women defeated Madrid 5:1 in the Primera División Femenina regular season on Saturday, a result that turned the table on paper expectations. By then the visitors had collected nine points from three victories, while the hosts sat fourteenth with a single point from three matches. The scoreline tells only part of the story.
L. Vallejo opened the scoring in the twenty-ninth minute, and P. Gutierrez doubled the advantage shortly after. S. Ouzraoui added a third before half-time, and Gutierrez made it four before the break. Madrid were second in the table but found themselves trailing by three goals at the interval.
P. Browne scored in the seventy-fifth minute and N. Escot added a fifth two minutes later. And here's the thing about such a night: Madrid managed only four shots on target across the entire ninety minutes. Espanyol recorded eight, and four of them found the net.
The numbers tell a familiar tale. Espanyol held 45 per cent possession while Madrid controlled 55, yet the visitors could not convert their limited opportunities. Sixty-one attacks against forty-seven for the away side, but only one big chance created by either team. To be fair, efficiency matters more than possession when the final whistle blows.
Espanyol moved off the bottom of the table with this result, while Madrid dropped their first points. We had backed the hosts for victory at thirty-eight per cent confidence, and the match delivered. Three or four moments decided this game; the rest was simply noise.
