FAS and Municipal played out a 1-1 draw in the CONCACAF Central American Cup group stage on Wednesday evening. The result leaves both sides in the hunt, though neither side has yet pulled clear. And here's the thing — the match was decided by moments rather than sustained pressure from either camp.
J. Cruz opened the scoring in the 36th minute, finding the net after a well-worked move. Municipal responded before the break when C. Hernandez converted a penalty in the 44th minute. R. Tejada picked up a yellow card just before the interval, but the game remained balanced heading into the second half.
The hosts started brighter after the restart. FAM made a change in the 46th minute, bringing on R. Munoz, while C. Diaz came on for the visitors in the 58th. To be fair, the visitors were not content to sit back — they pushed forward when they could, though they lacked the sharpness to trouble the defence consistently. Yellow cards for E. Medrano and J. Bantes added some friction in the middle period.
Bantes was booked twice in quick succession, in the 65th and 66th minutes, before the game settled into its final stages. The hosts made several changes as the match wore on — A. Cabeza, J. Nolasco and R. Tejada all came on in the 81st minute alone. E. Lopez was the last to arrive for the visitors in the 87th minute.
FAS dominated possession at 54 per cent and registered 139 attacks compared with 97 for Municipal. The hosts had eight shots on target but only managed four on target — by then the visitors had already equalised, so the statistical edge told only half the story. Municipal were more efficient with their chances, even if they had fewer opportunities. Shot accuracy sat at 21 per cent for the hosts and 18 per cent for the guests.
The draw means both teams remain in contention for the group. The goal difference is level after this round, and neither side has taken a decisive step forward. These things rarely get settled in a single afternoon — the group stage is long, and points are still to be found.
