MVV Maastricht and Patro Eisden played out a 1-1 draw in a Club Friendly on Friday, with the hosts eventually prevailing 5-4 in the penalty shootout. The two sides met at the start of August, with the match stretching into extra time before the decisive spot-kicks separated them.
MVV took the lead in the thirtieth minute, a goal that gave them confidence to control much of the first half. Patro responded well, equalising in the sixty-eighth minute to level the scores at half-time. The game remained balanced through the opening ninety minutes, with neither side able to find a winner in regular time.
By then the match had gone to extra time, and that is where the penalty shootout came into play. MVV were first to take a spot-kick and converted, while Patro missed their opening attempt. The Dutch side missed their second effort, but Patro failed to capitalise, and from there MVV took control of the sequence.
Both teams traded penalties through the middle rounds, with MVV scoring all their attempts and Patro also finding the net four times. In the final round, MVV converted while Patro missed, sending the visitors home empty-handed after a hard-fought encounter.
MVV dominated possession at sixty-three per cent, launching one hundred and three attacks compared to Patro's sixty-five. The visitors earned eight corners to the hosts' two, suggesting Patro pressed forward despite the deficit in territory.
The result follows a mixed pre-season for MVV, who have drawn three of their last five friendlies but also suffered defeats to Kortrijk II and Waasland-Beveren. Patro showed flashes of promise, notably beating Waalwijk 2-1, but inconsistency has been evident in their run of results.
