Montserrat defeated Turks and Caicos 2:0 in the opening League C fixture of the CONCACAF Nations League on Tuesday evening. Ashley Boatswain scored both goals for the visitors, who took control early and maintained it until the final whistle. The result puts Montserrat in a strong position at the top of their group after just one match.
Boatswain opened the scoring in the 41st minute, finishing a move that looked to have been worked patiently into space. By then the hosts were already struggling to find rhythm, their possession figure hovering around 43 per cent without generating anything meaningful. Lenni Rae Cirino picked up a yellow card shortly after the break, one of three bookings that Turk and Caicos would accumulate before the end.
The second goal arrived in the 69th minute, again from Boatswain, and this time the visitors had shifted into something resembling a tempo. Schuyler Selver and Junior Paul were among the substitutions that came on for Montserrat during the second half, while Lucas Kirnon replaced Cirino for the hosts. Christopher Louisy also entered the fray for Turks and Caicos in the 79th minute, but it was too little, too late.
The statistics tell a straightforward story. Montserrat enjoyed 57 per cent possession and registered four shots on target, while the hosts managed none. Both sides created zero big chances, which is perhaps the most telling figure of all — this was a match decided by clinical efficiency rather than volume. Montserrat completed 182 passes against 123, and their tackle count of 12 to 8 reflected their dominance in midfield battles.
The three points move Montserrat into a commanding position in League C, with Turks and Caicos now looking at a difficult road ahead. The hosts have lost three of their last five matches, including a 4:0 defeat to Belize and a 2:0 loss to Anguilla earlier this year. Montserrat, meanwhile, have shown flashes of improvement, though they remain vulnerable — they lost 0:3 to Guyana in their most recent outing before this victory.
