YUSID secured a comfortable 4-1 victory against Wexford in the First Division's Regular Season round 27 on Friday evening. The home side, sitting second in the table with 30 points, demonstrated their quality on the pitch while Wexford, in eighth place, struggled to impose themselves.
L. Dignam opened the scoring in the sixth minute, giving YUSID an early advantage that set the tone for what followed. C. Behan doubled the lead before half-time with a goal in the 29th minute, and by then it was becoming clear that Wexford would have work to do after the interval.
The second half saw Behan add his second goal in the 56th minute, stretching the back line further. M. Murphy made it four in the 61st minute before H. Smith converted a penalty in the 76th minute to give Wexford a consolation. The visitors had substitutions coming regularly - A. Verdon, R. McCourt, M. McCullagh, H. Curtis and L. Cailloce all came on in an attempt to change the game.
What stood out was YUSID's control of the match rather than any particular statistical dominance. They found no answer from Wexford's attempts to get back into the contest, and the yellow card for K. Dignam in the 33rd minute was perhaps the only notable disciplinary issue.
And here's the thing - this result keeps YUSID firmly in the hunt for promotion while Wexford's eighth place position reflects a season that has been difficult to turn around. The hosts had lost 1-2 to Trinity United in their previous outing, but this performance showed they can raise the tempo when they need to.
Wexford's recent form had shown promise with a 2-1 win over Bray Wanderers, but they were left exposed against a YUSID side that knew how to take their chances. The result means YUSID move closer to closing the gap on the league leaders, while Wexford must now regroup after a heavy defeat.
