Lahti secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Vaasa at Elisä Stadium on 31 August in the 22nd round of the Veikkausliiga. Aaron Lindholm's sixteenth-minute goal proved decisive in what was a match where the visitors controlled more of the play. Vaasa remain fifth with 33 points, while Lahti sit eighth on 29.
The decisive moment came early when Lindholm found the net in the sixteenth minute. After that, Vaasa tried to respond but never opened the door properly. They completed four substitutions during the second half — Raisanen, S. Lindholm, Kouassivi-Benissan and Lima — but none shifted the balance. Lahti brought on Andersson in the seventy-fourth minute and Sarr shortly before the end.
By then the statistics told their own story. Lahti held 56 per cent possession and created three big chances compared with Vaasa's zero. The home side managed only two shots on target from twenty-three attempts, while the visitors hit the target five times from eight attempts. Vaasa completed 309 passes out of 400, Lahti 423 out of 526.
Both sides were disciplined enough to avoid red cards, though Lahti picked up two yellow yellows — Kabashi and Lindholm — in the closing stages. Vaasa committed 16 fouls against nine, and won 19 aerial duels apiece. The visitors' key passes total of 12 versus Vaasa's four showed where the creativity lay.
The result extended Lahti's recent run of mixed form. They had won their previous outing 2-1 against SJK Seinäjoki but lost to KuPS and beat Jaro 2-0 before that. Vaasa's last victory came 1-0 against Ilves, and they have now gone three matches without a win, including a 0-1 defeat to Inter Turku earlier this month.
Points-wise the gap between fifth and eighth narrows to four after this result. Vaasa still hold a small cushion over the mid-table pack, but the pressure is building. Lahti remain outside the European places but know that every point matters when you are chasing the teams above.
