Martinelli leaves Arsenal for Al Hilal in club-record deal

Al Hilal have signed Gabriel Martinelli from Arsenal for a club-record £60m, after the winger turned down an earlier offer from Galatasaray this summer.

Gabriel Martinelli has left Arsenal for Al Hilal in a club-record £60m deal, surpassing the £40m the Gunners received from Liverpool for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2017.

The fee is fixed and includes a sell-on clause. Martinelli joined Arsenal as an 18-year-old from Brazilian side Ituano in 2019, so the sale counts as pure profit on the club's books.

The move to Saudi Arabia follows a rejected offer from Galatasaray earlier in the summer, worth around £38.9m, which Martinelli turned down. Arsenal's income from player sales this summer now stands at more than £120m.

Martinelli made 191 Premier League appearances for Arsenal, scoring 41 goals and providing 24 assists. Last season, as the club ended a 22-year wait for the title, he featured in 30 league matches but started only 11 of them — his lowest total since 2020/21, averaging 35 minutes on the pitch, with 1 goal and 4 assists. He was left out for both of Arsenal's opening two Premier League wins this season, with Christos Tzolis, signed from Club Brugge, starting instead. His departure follows that of fellow left-sided forward Leandro Trossard, sold to Besiktas in July.

Martinelli, 25, has signed a four-year contract with Al Hilal.
