Leon Goretzka will not make his Aston Villa debut until October. Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported the knee injury on social media, saying the 31-year-old midfielder will be out until next month.

He is yet to appear for Unai Emery's side in a competitive fixture.

Goretzka himself put the injury down to the spike in training load at his new club. Writing on social media, he said:

"Unfortunately my body has reacted to the increased load after a period of inactivity. It's frustrating, but I need this short break now so I can come back at full readiness. I'll use the coming days, including the international break, to fully recover, and I'll come back ready to fight and give everything for you and for Villa. I can't wait to be out on the pitch again."

Villa have taken one point from three Premier League matches this season and open their Champions League campaign against Club Brugge this week.
