Bruno Guimaraes Stuns Sunderland as Arsenal Win 2-0

Bruno Guimaraes settled the argument at the Stadium of Light twice over. First David Raya saved a penalty. Then, 121 seconds later, Guimaraes buried a shot off the underside of the crossbar to send Arsenal on their way to a 2-0 win over Sunderland.

Every touch he took had been booed. Guimaraes captained Newcastle before his move to Arsenal, and the home crowd made sure he knew it. He answered in the 58th minute, controlling a Declan Rice pass on the edge of the box and crashing a strike past the goalkeeper for his first goal for the club.

The turning point came just before that. Ezri Konsa was penalised for holding Dan Ballard, and Enzo Le Fee stepped up for Sunderland. Raya guessed right and tipped the spot-kick onto the post.

Sunderland pushed for an equaliser and Raya was called on again, saving well from Nordi Mukiele. The game was put beyond doubt in stoppage time. Reinildo Mandava hauled down Bukayo Saka as he ran clear on goal and was shown a second yellow card. Saka converted the resulting penalty to make it 2-0.

Raya was rated among Arsenal's best performers on the day, alongside Gabriel, for the way they anchored the defence and delivered the clean sheet. Ben White and Myles Lewis-Skelly were both withdrawn at half-time.

The result was Arsenal's fourth straight Premier League win and sixth in all competitions. It also moves them above Manchester City, who face Manchester United on Sunday, and puts Mikel Arteta's side three points clear at the top of the table.
