Valencia sack head coach Carlos Corberán

Valencia have sacked Carlos Corberán as head coach with the club bottom of La Liga after five rounds and just one point to show for them.

Friday's 1-0 defeat at Sevilla was the 43-year-old's last match in charge, and the club's fourth league loss in a row.

"The club wants to convey a message of stability and confidence in the future, reaffirming its commitment to building a solid, competitive and sustainable sporting project," Valencia said in its statement.

Corberán, born in the Valencian town of Cheste and a former player for the club's B side, took over at the Mestalla in December 2024 with Valencia in the relegation places. He steered them to a 12th-place finish that season and ninth last term. This campaign opened with a draw at Celta Vigo before defeats to Real Betis, Deportivo A Coruna, Barcelona and Sevilla. He had extended his contract to 2028 only this summer, so the sacking comes barely two months later. In total he took charge of 72 official matches.

Óscar Sánchez, coach of Valencia's second string, takes interim charge of the first team. The next permanent appointment will be the club's 18th since 2012.

Gourlay, who held similar posts at Chelsea, Reading and West Brom, departs alongside Corberán's entire coaching staff. Corberán himself managed West Brom for two seasons before moving to Valencia, taking the Hawthorns club to ninth and then fifth in the Championship and leaving them seventh.

Valencia have not finished higher than ninth in any of the past seven seasons.
