John Stones injured in first Inter start

The Inter defender was forced off with an injury during his first start of the season, raising fresh fitness worries ahead of the Roma clash.

The former Manchester City defender was chasing down Keinan Davis at the San Siro when he suddenly signalled to the bench that he needed to come off. Stones, 32, had lined up alongside Manuel Akanji, his old teammate at City and now an Inter regular with two goals this season, in the meeting with Udinese, who sit 11th in Serie A on 4 points from three matches, with Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, Arthur Atta and Davis their scorers so far.

The extent of the damage was not immediately known. Stones joined Inter as a free agent after Manchester City chose not to extend his contract when it ran out on 30 June, a decision shaped in part by his history of fitness problems. He has made four appearances for the Nerazzurri across Serie A and the Champions League, all but this one from the bench.

Inter already have absentees to manage. Hakan Calhanoglu missed the Udinese game entirely with an adductor issue picked up in the defeat to Real Madrid, while Federico Dimarco returned from a knee problem to feature off the bench. Djed Spence, signed from Tottenham Hotspur, is still waiting for his first involvement in a matchday squad after arriving with an injury of his own.
