Anthony Elanga faces lengthy injury lay-off at Newcastle

Anthony Elanga faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after missing Newcastle United's 4-1 defeat at Leeds United on Monday night, with head coach Matthias Jaissle unable to put a timescale on his return.

The Sweden winger had scored twice in Newcastle's opening three Premier League fixtures before the injury forced him out of the squad at Elland Road. Jaissle said the club still needs to establish how serious the problem is.

"The injury doesn't look good. We need to investigate how serious it is. Elanga is struggling with injury but at the moment it does not look that good," Jaissle said. Speaking to Sky Sports before kick-off, he added that "it could be long term" and that Elanga "will get another MRI next week and we will see."

The defeat left Jaissle facing a selection crisis ahead of the visit of Hull City. Jacob Ramsey was an unused substitute after feeling his thigh in the warm-up, and Nico Gonzalez went off in the first half after a blow to the head, with Jaissle citing mandatory concussion protocols for his withdrawal. "With Nico, as a manager and we as a club, we have the responsibility if he has that knock-out feeling as we all saw," he said.

Losing Elanga for any length of time removes a player who had made an immediate impact this season, and Jaissle's options look thinner with Ramsey and Gonzalez also in doubt for the weekend.
