Mourinho's old touchline manner returns after Atlético derby

Eight games into his Real Madrid return, Mourinho is criticising referees again after the 2-1 loss to Atlético. The Barcelona game on 25 October may test him.

José Mourinho took eight games, seven in LaLiga and one in the Champions League, to bring back the touchline manner he was known for when he left Real Madrid in 2013, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The change came after the 2-1 derby defeat to Atlético de Madrid. In the press room at the Metropolitano he complained about the referee and held up a sheet of paper showing two incidents in which he had wanted red cards for Atlético players.

There had been signs earlier. He asked reporters "ninguna pregunta sobre los penaltis?", a reference to the penalties given to Barcelona and Atlético. After the Betis game he went back to his old "why?" routine, asking why the penalty Mbappé missed was not retaken. Until then, by all accounts, he had been the calmer Mourinho, one who defended referees.

Real Madrid do not play again until 10 October, when Villarreal visit, because of the international break. The fixture that month that matters most is on 25 October, when Real Madrid go to Barcelona.

If the tone from the Metropolitano carries over, that match may be the first real test of which Mourinho is in the dugout.
