Gilberto Mora, 17, becomes Mexico's youngest goalscorer

Gilberto Mora, 17, became the youngest goalscorer in Mexico's history on Saturday, scoring in a 1-1 friendly draw with Colombia. Luis Suarez had put Colombia ahead early on.

It was his first goal in his 13th cap. He has 13 goals in Liga MX for Tijuana, and the missing piece was the gap in his record at international level.

He was the youngest player at the World Cup and started against Ecuador in the Round of 32. Only Pelé in 1958 was younger as a starter in a World Cup knockout match.

Mexico coach Rafa Márquez spoke about how the player should be handled. "We need to present him properly and provide him with reliable protection. We must do everything possible to support his growth and development. I am sure that will be the case, especially if he manages to convince a European club to sign him," Márquez said.

Yahoo Sports, quoting Diario AS, says that Real Madrid and Barcelona are both interested. The report says both clubs have good relations with his agent, Rafaela Pimienta, and want access to the Mexican market. Liverpool were linked with him through the summer.

Mora recently renewed with Tijuana. The report says the deal was made mainly so the club would get a fair fee if he moves to Europe next summer. If the renewal was drawn up with a sale in mind, Tijuana may be setting the terms for next summer already. Mexico play Peru on Wednesday.

Márquez's remarks suggest the national team staff expect a European move and want it to be the right one.
