Nico Schlotterbeck injured in Germany training

The Dortmund defender twisted his right ankle before Thursday's Nations League clash with Serbia, clouding Jürgen Klopp's winless start as Germany coach.

Nico Schlotterbeck went down injured during Germany training on Wednesday at Herzogenaurach, twisting his right ankle at the start of the session. The Borussia Dortmund centre-back was sent for an MRI, and the DFB is waiting on the result.

Sky Germany reported he was seen covering his face on the pitch after the foot injury, examined on site by Dr Jochen Hahne. The extent of the damage is not yet clear.

The timing is awkward. Jürgen Klopp's start as Germany head coach has brought a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands and a 0-1 defeat to Greece, Germany's first ever loss to the Greeks, and he needs a result against Serbia on Thursday at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Schlotterbeck played the full 90 minutes against the Dutch and was rested for the Greece match to manage his workload. He had been pencilled in to start against Serbia and was among the candidates to captain the side in the absence of Joshua Kimmich, who is not in the current squad.

This is the second ankle injury of the year for the 26-year-old. He hurt the ligaments in his left ankle at the World Cup, in the 2-1 group-stage win over Ivory Coast, and did not return to action until Dortmund's 3-0 win over Paderborn in the Bundesliga, coming on for 77 minutes before playing a full 90 the following week against Stuttgart.

Waldemar Anton, his club team-mate at Dortmund, is the other recognised centre-back in Klopp's squad and looks the likely partner at the back against Serbia if Schlotterbeck is ruled out, with Stuttgart's Finn Jeltsch also in the frame.

If the scan confirms a lay-off, Klopp would be facing his third match in charge without a settled first-choice back line, and a run of results that has yet to produce a win.
