Roy Keane: Man City players should bin their medals
After the Premier League confirmed financial breaches at Manchester City from 2009/10 to 2017/18, Roy Keane says he'd have thrown his medals away.
The Premier League has confirmed widespread financial breaches at Manchester City covering the period from the 2009/10 season to 2017/18, including the use of sham contracts and doctored financial statements that concealed the club's true position from regulators. Manchester City won three league titles during that spell and now faces serious sanctions.
Roy Keane, the former Manchester United captain, said that if he had played for City he would have discarded his medals.
"If I were their player, I would 100% throw the medals in the bin. Of course I would, because it was fraud. They were winning on the pitch because fraud was happening behind the scenes. It will be very difficult for their players and manager, because they are defending a club whose owners were prepared to commit fraud," Keane told ITV Sport.
He said the club's leadership knew the scale of the damage their conduct would cause and went ahead regardless.
"They knew this would hit a lot of people hard, but they did it anyway. If I were a player, I would 100% throw those medals in the bin. How else could you look at it? It's cheating. They won on the pitch because cheating was going on behind the scenes," Keane said on ITV.
