About the player
Welbeck grew up in the Longsight area of Manchester, the son of Ghanaian parents, and joined Manchester United's academy in 2001 after starting out at Fletcher Moss Rangers. He made his senior debut for United in 2008 and spent loan spells away from Old Trafford at Preston North End and Sunderland.
A move to Arsenal followed in 2014, and after five years in north London he had a short loan spell at Watford before joining Brighton & Hove Albion in 2020. It was at Brighton that Welbeck did his most lasting work in front of goal: in April 2025 he became the club's all-time leading Premier League scorer. In 2026 he moved on to Chelsea, agreeing a contract that runs to 2028.
Across his club career he made 142 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 29 goals, added 32 in 126 appearances for Arsenal, and reached 51 goals in 201 appearances for Brighton in all competitions.
Welbeck has been part of the England set-up since 2011, having come through the various youth age groups including the U21s, for whom he scored five goals in 14 caps. At senior level he won 42 caps and scored 16 goals, a run in the national side that stretched to 2018. He returned to the international fold in 2026, when he was named in England's provisional World Cup squad.
