Diego Segovia

He came through every youth category at Barrio Obrero in his home city. In 2018, after winning the South American Under-17 Championship with a Paysandú youth side, he moved to Argentina's Independiente. The transfer fee was never disclosed, though Independiente reportedly still owed Barrio Obrero around $153,000 for his training rights, paid in instalments.

What followed at Independiente was years of waiting behind the first-choice goalkeeper. Segovia established himself as the reserve team's number one in 2020 and began appearing on first-team matchday squads the following year, but his run at the club stalled repeatedly. He finally started a match for the senior side in January 2023, in a Verano friendly against Everton, and by 2024 he was still the reserves' regular goalkeeper.

The setback that defined his time in Argentina was not on the pitch. In January 2025, Segovia left Independiente on loan and returned to Uruguay with Deportivo Maldonado. He later spoke openly about why, describing struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, and sleepless nights that required medication.

The move home has given him exactly that. In the 2026 Apertura, Segovia became Deportivo Maldonado's first-choice goalkeeper, playing ten matches and keeping seven clean sheets. He has never been called up to Uruguay's senior national team.
