Ilie Sánchez Farrés

Ilie Sánchez built a career on doing the unglamorous work in front of the back four. He left home for spells across Europe and eventually the United States, before Austin brought him in to marshal midfield in MLS.

At Austin, Sánchez plays as a holding midfielder. He has never represented Spain, but in November 2025 he earned his first cap for Catalonia, the regional side that sits outside FIFA's structure, in a match against Palestine. Catalonia won 2-1, and Sánchez scored.

In 2023 he took up American citizenship, a step that came alongside his continued residence at his Spanish passport rather than in place of it. It reflects the shape of his career since leaving Spain: years built around MLS.
