About the player
Markus Ponath's route to FC Ingolstadt 04's first team ran through the club's own academy, where he progressed through the youth ranks and made 19 appearances in the A-Junioren-Bundesliga before joining the reserve side, FC Ingolstadt 04 II, in the Bayernliga. He made his professional debut for the senior side on 15 May 2022, in a 2. Bundesliga match against Hannover 96.
The breakthrough came away from Ingolstadt. Loaned to FV Illertissen for the 2024/25 season in the Regionalliga Bayern, Ponath made 33 league appearances and was the starting goalkeeper when Illertissen won the Toto-Pokal, beating SpVgg Unterhaching 1:0 in the final on 24 May 2025. He returned to Ingolstadt that June, and the club rewarded the loan spell with a contract extension to 2028, signed on 25 October 2025.
The following weeks brought a setback. During a match against SC Verl in October 2025, Ponath suffered a metacarpal fracture in his right hand, an injury that required surgery and has kept him out for a prolonged spell just as his new deal was taking effect.
Born in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, he began playing at FSV Pfaffenhofen before moving to Ingolstadt's academy as a boy.
