About the player
The shootout that took Deportes Limache into Chile's top flight for the first time went through their goalkeeper. In the 2024 Primera B promotion play-offs, Matías Bórquez saved the decisive penalty in the semi-final against Magallanes, then helped the club beat Rangers in the final — again from the spot. Limache had never played in the Primera División before.
He had started the season as the reserve, and only later won the position outright. That was his second spell at the club. He first joined in 2023 and was part of the side that won the Segunda División Profesional, taking Limache up to the Primera B.
The route there was slow. Bórquez was attached to Palestino's first team from 2017 to 2020 without a single official appearance, moved to Deportes Recoleta in 2020 and played twice, and joined Municipal Santiago on a free transfer in the second half of 2021. A season at San Antonio Unido in 2022 brought him 16 matches.
There is an oddity in the middle of it. During 2023 he spent six months with Los Rezagados, an amateur seven-a-side club in the Liga Rompe Redes, where he played as a forward: 11 appearances, 16 goals.
He remains Limache's first-choice goalkeeper in the 2025 season, wearing the number 1.
