About the player
Bellshill did not produce a striker who stayed a striker. That changed at St Mirren, where a loan move in 2010 saw him converted from a forward into a playmaker — a switch that stuck. He signed permanently the following year and won the Scottish League Cup with the Paisley club in 2013.
Dundee is where the switch paid off in full. McGowan joined in 2014 and stayed for nearly a decade, making over 245 league appearances.
His route to Falkirk came via a loan from Dunfermline Athletic in March 2023, a spell that included a match against his parent club on 7 March that year. From there his career moved through Cove Rangers and then Annan Athletic, where he retired.
