The football club took the name as its own: The Bairns, sons and daughters of the place, playing in navy blue with white shorts and red socks.

The club dates itself to 1876 and joined the Scottish Football Association two years later.

Then 1998, when Falkirk finished top but were refused entry to the Scottish Premier League: the ground did not have the 10,000 seats the league demanded. It took until 2004 for the club to move to the Falkirk Stadium at Westfield, and the following season's First Division title finally carried them up. The stadium holds 7,937.

Four Scottish Challenge Cups — 1994, 1998, 2005, 2012 — remain the record.

The oldest argument is with East Stirlingshire, who share the town, though the fixture that matters now is with Dunfermline Athletic across the Forth. They call it the Kincardine Derby, after the bridge that carries one set of supporters to the other. Stirling Albion and Stenhousemuir complete the local circuit through the Stirlingshire Cup.
