Motherwell

In April 2002, Motherwell went into administration, its debts estimated at two to three million pounds. The board released most of the first-team squad and turned to the academy, sending teenagers out at Fir Park while the club worked its finances back into order.

The club has topped Scottish football only once, in 1931/32, the season in which Willie MacFadyen scored 52 goals — still the club record. The Scottish Cup has been won twice, in 1952 and 1991, and the League Cup once, in 1950. Since 1985 Motherwell has not been out of the top division.

Fir Park holds 13,677. The team wears yellow and orange and is known as the Steelmen, after the works that once dominated the town's economy.

Among those who came up through the academy was Phil O'Donnell, who died in 2007. Gary McAllister and James McFadden also passed through the same ranks before their careers took them elsewhere.

The club itself dates to May 1886, when two local sides, Alpha and Glencairn, merged to form Motherwell.
