Capacity had once run far higher. Fir Park held around 35,000 in the 1930s, when 35,632 packed in for a Scottish Cup quarter-final replay against Rangers. The Safety of Sports Grounds Act of 1975 pushed the number down to 22,500, and the rebuild that followed the Taylor Report in the early 1990s cut it further, to the low five figures the ground holds today.

That rebuild gave Fir Park its current stands: the South Stand went up in 1993 for £750,000, the North Stand followed in 1995, and the East Stand was refitted alongside them. The most personal belongs to the Main Stand, renamed the Phil O'Donnell Stand for the Motherwell captain who collapsed and died during a match here in December 2007.

The pitch changed more recently than the stands. After years of complaints about flooding and frost, a hybrid surface — natural grass reinforced with synthetic fibres — was laid in 2021 and 2022, only the fourth of its kind in Scotland. Fir Park has also stepped outside routine league business now and again: Scottish Challenge Cup finals through the 1990s and again in 2017, League Cup semi-finals, regular visits from Scotland's women's and under-21 sides, and a season as Gretna's adopted home in 2007–08.
