It was the club's second win in that competition, twelve years after they had seen off Heart of Midlothian 3–2 for the first one. Before 2013, the last silverware of any real weight had been the Scottish Cup of 1987 — the third the club had won, after 1926 and 1959.

The oddest trophy in the cabinet is neither. In the 1979–80 Anglo-Scottish Cup , a competition mostly contested by English second-tier sides, St Mirren went past Bristol City 5–1 over two legs and became the only Scottish club ever to win it. Sixty years earlier the club had gone further afield still and taken the Barcelona Cup of 1922, beating Notts County in the final.

The black-and-white vertical stripes now taken for granted in football grounds everywhere started here. St Mirren adopted them in 1884, the first club in the world to do so; the sides that had played the first matches after the 1877 founding wore red and blue.

Home is St Mirren Park on Greenhill Road in Paisley, occupied since 2009 and all-seated. The listed capacity is 7,937 — it had been 8,023 until 2017, when a platform for disabled supporters went in and took the number down.
