Perth's fiercest football rivalry runs east along the Tay rather than across town: matches against Dundee and Dundee United are known as the Tayside derby, and nothing else on the fixture list carries quite the same edge for St Johnstone.

The club's name comes from St John's Toun, Perth's old name — the same root behind the Saints nickname. Founded in 1884, the team played its first match the following February.

St Johnstone left their old ground for McDiarmid Park in 1989, the first stadium in Britain built entirely with seating rather than standing terraces. Saints, playing in blue and white, have called it home ever since; it holds 10,696.

Two Scottish Cups, won in 2014 and 2021, sit alongside a League Cup from 2021 — the two arrived in the same season for what remains the club's only domestic double.

A club-record run of sixteen straight seasons in the Scottish Premiership, the top flight, ended with relegation in 2025. St Johnstone spent just a single season out of the top division, winning the Championship in 2025-26 to return at the first attempt.

A Scottish top-flight title has never featured in any of that. Third place, last managed in 2012-13, remains as close as St Johnstone have come.
